A Referendum on the Brexit Deal is a real possibility

A Vote for Life bill is going through parliament right now.   When it becomes law, if you have been out of the country for more than 15 years, you will be able to register to vote in your old constituency.  The next thing will be a private members bill calling for a referendum on the deal.

So there is real possibility that there will be a Referendum on the Brexit Deal.  If and when this happens it is important that voters have a clear idea of what is as stake.  Here are some reasons why a vote to stay in the European Union is a good idea.

 A vote to stay in the European Union is a vote to avoid Economic Disaster.

With free trade in Europe, The UK has enjoyed 20+ years of economic success.  If we no longer allow manufacturing industry free access to Europe, many will take their factories and jobs to other countries, which are in the free trade zone.  More star British companies like Unilever will be moving away from the UK.  The City of London will lose the valuable Euro clearing business and many jobs will be lost, if we are on the outside.  Tax revenues will fall and there will be less money for pensions and essential services such as the NHS and education.

It is generally agreed that Brexit would reduce the UK GDP (Gross Domestic Product) by at least 5%.   In 2017 the GDP was around £2000 billion. So a 5% fall will amount to some £95 billion pounds less each year.  It is estimated we would save around £7.3 billion by leaving the EU, which is no way will compensate for the fall in GDP and the consequent fall in prosperity and increase in poverty in the UK.   Leaving the EU will make the average Brit much worse off.

The UK has the sixth-largest government debt of advanced economies, estimated at US$ 2629 billion, or £1,905 billion. Right now the national debt represents about 95% of GDP, which makes us no better than France or Spain.     see Debt figures, see GDP figures

To make things worse, the UK government has an annual deficit (ie spends more than it raises in tax revenue) which currently runs at £52bn or 2.6% of GDP.  The deficit has to be paid for by increased borrowing, which means that the national debt increases every year.   If the GDP falls, the debt will soon be 100% or more of the GDP.  see deficit figures.

If the UK was a business, it would be heading towards bankruptcy.

According to the CBI (Confederation of British Industry)  The UK’s net contribution to the EU budget is around €7.3bn, or around 0.4% of GDP.  (The BBC makes the cost £8.4bn).  As a  comparison that’s around a quarter of what the UK spends on the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and less than an eighth of the UK’s defence spend.  The £116 per person net contribution is less than that from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands. With the EU, Europe has enjoyed the longest period of peace in recorded history.  The regular meetings between the leaders of Europe and the lunches and dinners and expense accounts may seem an expensive business.  But the human and economic cost of war is much higher.  Leaders, who regularly eat together, do not got to war with each other.

Many in Europe want a European army.  Before the triggering of Article 50, the UK could have vetoed this.  If we really leave the EU, there will be no-one to stop this, and  if a European army becomes a reality, it will be used.  If we are part of Europe, the UK will be a major contributor to the EU army and The UK will be able to reduce our spending on defence, which is a major drain on the UK economy.

We need a strong Europe that can stand up to the Putin’s of this world. The Oxford internet Institute found that 105 Russia linked Twitter accounts posted a total of 16000 tweets in the run up to the referendum.   It suits Russia for Europe to be divided.  To be fair Russia´s influence on the results was nothing compared to the billions of adverts in social media bought by Cambridge Analytica and AI

 A vote to stay in the European Union is a vote for Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) protects the rights of citizens.  It is a force for good, and takes the best of British law to countries in the EU without our legal traditions.  Without it as a last line of defence, UK citizens will be more vulnerable.

In 2017, The ruling by the European court of human rights (ECHR) resolved the issue of whole-life sentences, which was cited by the former justice secretary Chris Grayling as one of the key reasons he had proposed a new British bill of rights to give the UK courts and parliament the final say in such matters.

As for workers rights, leaving the EU means many of the workers’ rights that have been won over many decades will no longer be protected by EU law and could potentially be abolished at any point. According to the House of Commons Library, a “substantial component” of workers’ rights in the UK comes from EU law.  see Workers Rights

A vote to stay in the European Union won’t affect overall Immigration

The official population in the UK rose to a new high in 2017 of 65.6 million.  The approximate split of the population is

When the EU expanded its membership in 2004, member countries were given the option to bar immigrants from the new member countries for three years.  The Blair government was almost the only EU country that chose not to bar immigrant workers, with the result that there was a surge in immigration.  Immigrant workers helped fuel growth in the UK; but it has also caused social problems.  These problems are in part the creation of the Blair government.  But it is much easier to blame someone else – ie the EU – for the mistakes of our elected leaders.  see Population figures

But these figures are approximations. The government cannot be precise, because it really has no idea how many people are in the UK.  The UK is the only first world country not to have identity cards.  Without ID cards with a finger print, it is impossible to be sure of someone’s identity and very difficult to control immigration.  A scam used by ner-do-wells from Europe is to sign on to the dole with one identity, go home, change their name (apparently this costs 10 euros in Poland), then come back to the UK and sign on for benefits under the new name.  Without finger prints it is impossible to control this.  Again it is quite wrong to blame the EU, for the failure of the UK government to introduce basic ID cards.  see immigration figures

No other countries gives out benefits to people, who have not paid into the system for at least two years.  EU law decrees that EU immigrants are only permitted to stay long term if they have proper work.  In the UK, national insurance numbers are handed out willy nilly.  If people take advantage of the benefits system in the UK, it is because the UK government lets them.  Again it is not the fault of the EU.

A vote to stay in the EU is a vote for Control

The European Union is not run by faceless bureaucrats.  The administration is like the UK civil service with departments headed by commissioners, appointed by elected representatives.  The commission answers to the European Parliament that is made up of elected members. It may not be a perfect democracy.  But do we really want a system that elects a  European president by popular vote?

Nor is the UK electoral system perfect.  It perpetuates governments that do not represent all the people.  If something gets through parliament, it becomes law, regardless of any wider implications for human rights.  If we do not have the safety net of the EU, we give control to the elite in the UK and are vulnerable to extremists.  Given the present government’s unconditional support for Brexit, can we really trust them to do what is Best for Britain?

A vote to stay in the EU is a vote for our Future

If we leave the EU, it will be much harder to get work in Europe.  Studying abroad will be more complicated and expensive without access to the Erasmus programme. The young will lose out big time.

Life for Brits abroad will be more complicated.  Already we have lost out with the fall in value of the pound.  With Brexit, many will have problems using the Spanish National Health service, residency in Spain will no longer be so easy to obtain, and you will probably need a visa if you want travel around Europe.

He specialises in Reformas, working with reputable construction companies in Valencia. Recent work includes installing centralised air conditioning systems, bespoke window systems and traditional Valencian blinds.    Emilio normally works on a fixed price. So there is no chance of costs running out of control.

Following Darwin’s principal the species on planet earth evolved.  Energy became matter.  We contend that energy also continued as energy on another dimension.  All species have a physical and an energetical form.  The human spirit / energy developed much more than any other species, which is the reason why the human species has been and continues to be the top species on earth.

We believe that the physical world is matched by a spirit / energy world.  Spirit exists separate from the human body, making possible a before-life a Present-life and an After-life.

The spirit world exists in another dimension and includes positive and negative energies.  If you are drawn to the positive, you will connect to the good (God), which is the coming together of positive energies.  Equally if you are drawn to the darker side, there is no shortage of negative energies that you can connect to.

SpiritContinuum is dedicated to promoting and publishing scientific theories that support the existence of a spirit world.  New theories have emerged since the 1990s, and it now is becoming clear the existence of a spirit world is much more than just a possibility.

There are almost as many ideas as to the “Meaning to Life” as there are thinkers. More than anything, we hope that our readers will find a “Meaning to life” that is right for them.

Property Management

Peter Miles Heskett  has 15 years’ experience of managing property in Valencia. He started managing our own student flats in 2002/2003.  In 2005,  he project managed our first complete refurbishment. ValenciaShortStay was born and by 2006 we were managing a number of client flats. During the America’s cup and Formula 1 years, we were busy with short stays. Since then, mid and long stays have become more common.

Property management has been the main activity throughout, to keep the properties in good condition, to minimise problems. We encourage preventive maintenance. For example, limescale is a big problem in Valencia. Unless protected, water heaters have a relatively short life, water pipes block up over time, and lack of water pressure is a common problem in older buildings. In 2009 we installed our first HydroFlow (an electronic de-scaler). We now source HydroFlow at trade price and most of our clients have one installed.

We work with a network of local tradesmen and aim to get value for money for our clients. Yellow pages may be convenient. But you can pay 3 times as much as you should, for changing a lock or for fixing an air con unit.

We provide a full range of services, including:-

ON-GOING MAINTENANCE

Monthly charges of between 25 and 45 euros depending on size and age of property . Service includes

  • Key holding.
  • Pre-visit cleaning / maintenance visits.
  • Arrange repair visits for minor repairs, while the client is there to minimize time costs.
  • Arranging room painting as required.
  • Organize service of air con and water heater.
  • Liaise with Building administrator and your insurers as required.
  • Instant reports with photos using Whatsapp.
  • Mail box checking and other (optional)

Moving On

  • Energy certificate (needed if you want to rent or sell your property)
  • Paint jobs to attract buyers
